EOC WEEK : Personal Freedom vs Union Membership

-What would you do if you wanted to work for a company and you had to join the union to get the job? Well, I would fight to get the job because there is a law saying i do not have to, it is the Wagner act.
-What if they called a strike over an issue you did not agree with? I would not strike with them simple.
-What other issues might concern you if you had to belong to get a paycheck? I would call a lawyer because of the Wagner act or get fired or quit.

BOC WEEK 9: History of labor unoins in the United States

http://www.kentlaw.edu/ilhs/curricul.htm#6
The civil war led to the formation 12 national unions. Labor was in high demand, the workers had a large amount of power. The eight hour movement begins and trade unionism spreads to skilled factory workers in the 1800s. “1852
The Typographical Union founded which is the first national workers organization to endure to the present day.” “First state law limiting women's working day to ten hours passed in Ohio.” In 1852 In 1863 Abraham, Lincoln supported strikes and gave his famous Emancipation Proclamation speech. Many of the first unions were formed during this time. The first labor law”1868
First federal 8 hour day passed, only applies to laborers, mechanics, and workmen employed by the government.” Many new laws and strikes happened and police beat many people as well. The state militia’s were with many stikers but federal troops came to stop the strikes as well. Many of the first unions formed are gone due to the depression. There were many strikes by sit down or just not working and some strikers even killed people and the government killed stikers as well. Now we have high priced laywers and labor laws about anything and everything you can name to protect anybody from harsh working conditions and some to help like the law for pregnant women to have 6 months to take care of the newborn and other helpful laws.
“1914
Clayton Act passed which limits the use of injunctions in labor disputes.
Ludlow Massacre in Colorado. Wives and children of striking miners are set aflame when National Guardsmen attack their tent colony during a strike against the Colora do Fuel and Iron Company.
President appoints the Colorado Coal Commission to investigate the Ludlow Massacre and labor conditions in the mines following an unsuccessful strike by the United Mine Workers.”
“1947
Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act which restricts union activities and permits the states to pass "right-to-work" laws.
Th e Norris-La Guardia Act prohibition against injunctions in labor disputes was held to be inapplicable to the Government in U.S. v. John L. Lewis.
1963
The Equal Pay Act prohibited wage differences for workers based on sex.
1922
The United Mine Workers was held not reponsible for local str ike action, and strike action was held not a conspiracy to restrain trade within the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. (Coronado Coal Co. v. UMMA)
In southern Illinois, coal strikers kill twenty guards and strikebreakers in the "Herrin Massacre".”

Week 8 EOC: sexual harassment

I think that sexual harassment is wrong because of what it can do to a person in many ways. It is unwanted, unfair, illegal, and should not be accepted anywhere in the workplace. It is hard to think about work and do it well when you are worrying about someone harassing you. It disrupts the feeling of cooperation and might halt everybody’s work if it gets bad enough. The movie Apartment showed two people getting sexually harassed and it is wrong.
"sexual harassment occurs, "when submission to or rejection of this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment, unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment.""

week 7 EOC: How to evaluate someone in 15 easy steps

Hardly anything, because I did not understand the assignment. No, I was not surprised. I was decently prepared by looking at the chapter, and listening to the teacher. Nina, and Kelsey gave very quick answers and did not hesitate. I was fine with the interview and gave my answers. Nina felt she was a good student. Kelsey felt she was a good student. They both (Nina and Kelsey) would be good at what ever their degree is and probably excel. Yes I would want them to represent the school. This experience could have been better by not being fictitious and barely understandable. A real person and a better explanation of what this is all for since I will probably be doing little to none of this in my career.

Week6 EOC Steps in job instruction training

This movie did not follow the steps of Job Instruction Training. I do not understand this assignment. The fictitious company clearly did not follow these steps and I do not know what to say. The company did not put the new chick “ at ease “ and did not “arouse” her or give her “interest in training”. The company did not follow step 2 either or 3 or 4 and they was no consideration. I have no idea what this assignment teaches me.

Week 6 BOC stolen valor lawsuit

The company went wrong in the fact that they did not have any background check of any kind to find out if the person they hired was a Vet. The company can ask for pay stubs from the military, IDs, DD214, Proof of Veteran benefits. The Company did a bad thing because even preferring Vets they are discriminating towards 90% of America. The person who did not get the job still has the right to be employed with out having to worry about being like most of America. The Person could have sued, should have been able to show proof in the interview, and the interviewer did the wrong thing by not asking simple background questions without asking rude or racist questions. Anyone who lies about this should go to jail for at least four years because of the rarity of Americans who actually do serve and die for this country. I see this as a weakness of our country. Israel citizens have Mandatory military service and some countries have 7 year olds in military service, Wow.

Week 5 EOC stolen valor

This so called controversy is controversial because people are faking military action and now it is deemed legal to lie about under free speech. People are mad because they want the Stolen Valor Act to be enforced. I think everyone is being juvenile and making a big deal out of something that can be settles out of court. If the society around the “Bad” person just ostracizes him/her and makes them homeless from not giving them jobs, support of any kind, then they will be homeless and die and no one will have to worry about the liars anymore because the problem maker is dead. In the good fun of people who can whine about stuff they do not like will whine.
People who do not like this fact of this subject being legal needs to contact their senator and ask them to make it a law.
Personally I say make the liars suffer as much as the law can because military service is a serious subject and less than 10% of Americans serve their country and the rest need to observe that with respect.

WEEK 4 BOC: Analyze your own job

Job analysis of my job by Richard Cline:
Food Service Specialist (A cook in the army for if you can not understand the “Food” part or “Service”). A cook is pretty important when people need fed or are hungry and need to keep fighting. Nutrition is key to surviving and staying alive even in noncombat situations. A cook and it does not matter because pay goes by rank, not job. I am in the army so my word is good for this information. The Commander of my unit and then it goes up to the President. I report to my sergeant and I do not monitor others but I monitor the food. I do not understand the contacts part. I cook and clean for soldiers. Be physically up to any task required to be a soldier. We are told to use any tools given to us by the people in charge to get the job done. No computer necessary unless a NCO is going to do something. You need no baseline knowledge of any kind because the Army trains you to know all you need to know and gives you plenty of material to relearn anything you do not know or new material you need to learn.

Week 3 EOC:Networking and external sources

I am tired of this class i pick Schools and Collages because that were i got my jobs and 300 words. Good night and quit with assuming my future job will be Human Resources, how dare you assume, I am not paying money for someone to dictate my future, Good night Sir!!!!!!!!!

Week 3 EOC: Culinary Survivors

2 Businesses who demonstrate bad HR are El Sombrero
“These days, he said, "we're barely hanging on. The last five years have been terrible, because of the downturn of the economy and people are without work. A lot of customers used to come every week, now they only come twice a month."
He has adapted by cutting hours to 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays,
until 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.” (http://www.lvrj.com/taste/longtime-restaurants-keep-traditions--yet-adapt-to-times-105329183.html)
and the other is Bob Taylor's Ranch House
"The only thing I've changed is that the bar has a lot of (Pittsburgh) Steelers stuff," Special said.
The past few years, he said, have been "the worst in my lifetime, as far as it's affected the masses of people in town. It's affected us, too, but I knock on wood every day. I feel fortunate. I think because of our longevity and people knowing us, we haven't been hit as hard as other people have." (http://www.lvrj.com/taste/longtime-restaurants-keep-traditions--yet-adapt-to-times-105329183.html)
Good examples are The Bootlegger Bistro and Metro Pizza “To reach the next generations, he hosts a monthly focus group roundtable with students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and has a "reverse intern," a UNLV hospitality student who helps them understand "how people of her age are communicating with each other and about what's important to her generation of customer.” ,"We have nutritionists working with us," she said. "We have new ideas and new recipes, so our menu is kind of an eclectic blend of classic and contemporary Italian cuisine."

week 2 EOC: The Charming Man

The charming man was about a (I guess Danish) guy who is kind of racist. He meets a person he knew and made fun of in school and now he starts to care because she’s better looking. He was having a hard time because the government was controlling how people got jobs. The office that gave out jobs got his name wrong and he had to take a Danish language and naturalization class and met his school friend because she is the teacher. He dresses up, as an immigrant guy to be in her class under the fake name because if he did not the class would have been canceled and she would be fired. There was a field trip about Danish history and it was very discriminitory. The Danish guy was also very mean to the new receptionist calling her a peasant girl. The teacher’s old boyfriend calls the Danish guy a MOG and tries to beat him up. The Danish guy helps out a immigrant find a job and almost everything is good and the Danish guy learns not to discriminate.

week2 EOC zippy airline catering

1. I do not know because there is not enough information. If there was information to answer the question, then there would be evidence of progress written from the changes made like “ thoroughly converted to a production-line approach”; and “ the hospitality company that purchased Zippy Airline Catering decided to re-engineer the preparation process.” “ And the speed of the conveyor belt had been calculated by the engineers who designed the system”. There is no evidence of increased progress or profit made just a half finished story about a company buying another company.
Pg 83 (15-53 Managing Hospitality Human Resources, forth edition Robert H. Woods)
2. I do not know what will happen or care for that matter either. If I had to guess I would say they would have no increase or decrease in profit but an increase in profit but it will be wasted. It would be wasted on hired people to analyze and manage more people to where they go bankrupt if there ever is a big enough change. Like changes in staff relations, financial crises, some manager stealing money, or some food borne illness in the food because of lack of planning and training when upgrading the factory. “ A conveyor belt was installed and each new employee was assigned a single task in the meal preparation. Employees now sat along either side of the conveyor and places only a single item-meat, potato, or vegetable- on the tray.” pg83 (15-53 Managing Hospitality Human Resources, forth edition Robert H. Woods)
3. Before changing anything there should have been a decant amount of research done on sanitation, new equipment, and how a faster production line would have impacted the company image, and how much money it would take to start, finish, and analyze and hire all the new people and equipment and changes so not to make a big mess of the company but actually create a better bigger branch of the company.

week 1 eoc:old timer makes waves

Age is big issue when it comes to hiring and firing in the hospitality industry, because the younger generation is the preferred choice to hire and the aged are not wanted because everyone thinks they cannot cope with new things. Age discrimination is wrong and how issues are handled is also discrimination. The person being discriminated against should also handle it properly and through the correct chain of commands and pathways to show good faith as well. The management handling cases of discrimination and fowl play should go by laws and EEOC but can also use Business Necessity if a employee does not want to be trained or accept change but also keep in mind the Just Cause policy. When dealing with firing and retirement it does not matter how much time a person has given to a company unless it deals with retirement benefits or compensation. (15-53 Managing Hospitality Human Resources, forth edition Robert H. Woods)

I have a Culinary Arts Degree from Pittsburgh Le Cordon Blue. I have a Baking and Pastry Degree from Scottsdale Le Cordon Blue. I have worked at Walt Disney World and at a Casino in Reno. I like to travel and take pictures and eat at new restaurants I see. I do not like human resource management class and I do not like these assignments because I am going to hire a HR person so I do not have to worry about these kind of problems and this class becomes unimportant. I like flowers and small flowers and big flowers. I like Milk a lot. I like cooking a lot. I like baking a lot. I really really like to learn about food and wine and beer and brewing beer and other liquors. I like to learn and drink different teas and any new type of beverage or liquor I have not heard about before.
